  • Glacier Stream

    Glacier Stream

There were quite a few large streams to cross on the Black Rapids Glacier this year with absolutely no englacial drainage to help reduce the water at the surface. At least they are pretty to look at. The channel here was quite a bit deeper and wider than it looked and this little island of ice with the precariously balanced boulder proved to be a useful crossing point.

  • Aurora Spiral

    Aurora Spiral

The aurora came out again Wednesday evening, but it was nothing like the display the night and morning before. There was this cool spiral in the sky that seemed pretty stable - it didn't change much over 5 minutes. Blogpost: http://lwpetersen.com/photo-blog/week-northern-lights-wouldnt-quit/

    Spruce Ballroom

Snow-clad spruce trees at sunrise. Sunrises have to be one of my favorite things about Fairbanks, next to the aurora, and the mountain range to our south. Our sparse boreal forests give nice open views of the sky too. I love seeing those subtle arctic blues behind the brilliant colors. Almost every morning in the winter is wonderful!

    Through the Forest

Beautiful forest canopy and floor on Mt. Kearsarge. This turned into one of the rainiest days ever on the trail for me. Even wearing full rain gear, we were absolutely soaked to the bone. I'm very happy we weren't camping, this would have been absolutely miserable! First, we had mist, then drizzle, then downpours, then misty downpours. The Lincoln Trail on Mt. Kearsarge is one of my favorite New Hampshire trails not in the White Mountain National Forest. It's 8.6 miles total (out-and-back), and I would usually only see people near the summit on the last mile, starting near the upper parking area. It travels through some beautiful and pristine forest. Here's my gallery from this day: Rainy Day on Mt. Kearsarge
