Boreal Forest

An early snowfall fell in September of 2013 in Fairbanks. The foliage was just coming into peak and the oranges and yellows were beautifully covered in a bit of white. I would not mind if snow fell every year on autumn leaves.

Autumn Boreal Light
The Sun is already hanging low in our sky in the middle of the day, showering the taiga in golden light.
Pond
Early May in Fairbanks, Alaska. Still some snow on the ground, but almost all the small ponds have completely thawed. Color starts to return to the taiga.

Pond Reflection
This is a small pond just off of Sheep Creek Road near Smith Lake in Fairbanks. We drive past these little ponds all the time and don't think much about them because they are everywhere. I need to take some time to really think about that . . . I don't stop in these beautiful places because this is a sight we find everywhere. I think it's time to slow down and explore everything.

It was really cool to watch the fog creep over the ground from Ester Dome this morning.

It was another fine morning, third one this week! The color didn't quite get as spectacular as it did during Tuesday's sunrise, I think there were just a bit too much in the way of clouds today. Had a nice walk on the UAF trails anyway.

Merry Christmas from Fairbanks!
This was taken during our walk today when it was just about 35 below. Just look how high the Sun is at noon! This time of the year it only rises about 2 degrees above the horizon - look at the horizon, hold out your arm, and stick out your thumb (horizotally). That's about how high the Sun gets! Today's day was about 3 hours 45 minutes long and we're gaining a little over 1.5 minutes a day for now.
I hope everyone has had a wonderful holiday season and that it continues to be merry through the New Year - and for all of 2014!sunlightcoldnoonchristmas daywinterfairbanksforestborealtaigaalaskaportfoliowhiteorangeskyphoto of the day
