    Balance

Rocks on ice pedestals on the Castner Glacier. The rocks insulate the ice beneath them, so the surrounding ice melts faster.

Remnants of an ice cave on the Castner Glacier. Now it's just a giant arch.

On the edge of the Castner Glacier in the Deltas looking down the Castner Valley into the Eastern Alaska Range. Sunny, snowy and 30 below temperatures make for fun camping and skiing!

  • Snowy surface

    Snowy surface

The Castner Glacier is partially vegetated with a lot of willows and alders. It makes for interesting skiing when the snow is soft. Black Cap and White Princess are off in the distance with some lenticulars starting to form.

  • More cracks

    More cracks

Longitudinal crevasses on the Castner Glacier. These cracks often form where the glacier valley widens, increasing the tensile stress on the ice and run parallel to the flow direction. These are less common than transverse crevasses that run perpendicular to the flow direction and often occur where the glacier steepens (you can see a few transverse crevasses on the upper right side of this image). More photos of the Castner Glacier here.
