On September 9th and 10th of 2014 there were a succession of solar flares and coronal mass ejections that were partially earth-directed. Expecting good aurora we drove out of town to the White Mountains to watch the skies on the night of September 11. While driving back from the Whites early in the morning on the 12th, the sky erupted as we neared Chatanika. We made a few stops near Cleary Summit to watch. What started as a rather drab display turned out to be one of the best shows I've seen yet.
