  • After the Storm

    After the Storm

Crepuscular rays, sometimes known as "God rays" over the Black Rapids Glacier after a morning thunderstorm. This was taken from our campsite on top of a rocky medial moraine. The clouds broke up afterward and it turned out to be a beautiful day. I love the subtly lit glacier surface on the left side of the image. Of course, the bad weather came back a few days later.

    Rainbows and Lokets

A rainbow appears over the Loket Tributary to the Black Rapids Glacier in the Alaska Range. A few minutes before this I watched a lightning strike trigger a small landslide. I'm not sure how I felt about standing out in the middle of the glacier on top of the medial moraine at that moment.

  • I was awoken by the sound of thunder this morning and had to run out and cover the theodolite. I saw a lightning strike on a nearby hillside, triggering a small rock-fall. It was kind of neat.

  • I watched as this storm approached from the southeast and cross over the Loket tributary before moving just barely to our west and north where it got stuck on some of the high peaks for about half an hour. Cool rainbow for a lot of the time.

  • It started to rain pretty hard, I removed the theodolite from the tripod when a little hail began to fall.

  • After the storm passed we could see other big thunderstorms off to the south. Unfortunately this brought an end to our warm weather.

  • Gorgeous day on the moraine! Looking down at one of the large landslides encompassing the entire width of the glacier.
